Q: If I require medical care, do I have to go to a physician chosen by my employer?

A: When you are hurt on the job seek medical care as soon as possible. You are not required to go to physicians selected by your employer for medical care. You may choose up to two medical providers of your own, the cost of which must be paid by your employer or its Workers' Compensation insurance carrier. However, your employer is allowed to require you to see a physician of their choice for the purpose of an evaluation of your condition. The rules concerning an employee’s right to select his or her own physician to provide medical care for a work related injury is more specifically set forth in the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act.
