Car Accidents Caused by Drowsy Driving

The FDA has recently increased its efforts to warn consumers of the effects some over-the-counter medications have on a person’s ability to drive. During a briefing earlier this month on the dangers of driving while drowsy, FDA medical officer Dr. Ali Mohamadi suggested certain medications, including antidiarrheals and antihistamines, may give the false impression of being safe because they are available OTC, but warned they should not be used prior to driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, around 2.5 percent of all fatal car accidents involve drowsy drivers. An additional two percent of car accidents that result in injury involve drowsy drivers as well. The FDA hopes to lower this number through increased consumer awareness.
