New Distracted Driving Laws in Illinois

Texting while driving is already illegal in Illinois, but as of January 1, 2014, the use of any handheld device while driving will be punishable by fines up to $150. This new distracted driving law amends HB 1247 to ban using handheld devices for typing, web browsing, and even making phone calls.

How effective this law will be is yet to be seen, but Governor Pat Quinn, who signed the legislation into law on August 16th, hopes these new prohibitions significantly reduce motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted drivers.
