Chicago, IL (February 25, 2025) – A late-night crash involving a semi-truck on the Kennedy Expressway turned dangerous when steel pipes tumbled onto the roadway, striking two vehicles and sending two people to the hospital.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Tuesday near Lake Street in downtown Chicago. According to Illinois State Police, the semi was traveling northbound when it made contact with the Lake Street bridge, dislodging its cargo. Heavy steel pipes spilled onto the expressway, hitting a 2017 Toyota Camry and a 2020 Toyota Corolla. Two occupants from those vehicles sustained injuries, though authorities confirmed they were not life-threatening.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, shutting down multiple lanes as they worked to clear the debris. By 11:35 p.m., officials managed to move the pipes to the shoulder, allowing traffic to resume. Cleanup efforts extended into Wednesday morning as authorities worked to remove the remaining cargo.
At this time, it remains unclear whether the truck driver was cited or if improper load securing played a role in the crash. Investigations are ongoing.
