Nursing homes bring families much comfort and peace of mind. It is very reassuring for loved ones to be in an environment to live out their golden years with the assistance that they may need. In the state of Illinois, there are specific safety requirements for nurses and caregivers at nursing homes. These requirements revolve upon health, safety, and supervision. However, for a combination of reasons, some nursing homes and assisted living facilities simply do not fulfill these safe living requirements. Many of these violations range between:

  • Emotional abuse
  • Financial evasion
  • Neglect
  • Physical abuse
  • Sexual abuse or exploitation

Unfortunately, these forms of abuse can be harmful to the elderly and will not go away without legal action. Many nursing homes are simply understaffed or do not take the time to adequately investigate all their potential employees. By not properly staffing their facilities, it is more difficult for staff to give your loved one the attention that they deserve, which can lead to serious injuries such as falling out of bed or bedsores. Lack of supervision also leads to nursing home residents putting themselves at risk of falling to perform basic functions, such as going to the bathroom. Even though nursing homes and assisted living facilities are required to prevent falls, which is the leading cause of fatal injuries in the elderly, one in three adults fall every year.

In addition to preventable falls, another leading safety violation that is rampant in nursing homes and assisted living facilities is malnutrition. Due to health issues and the effect that aging has on the body, the elderly has special dietary needs. However, shortages in staffing and attempts to save a few cents lead to serious malnutrition. Similar to falling, lack of supervision contribute to serious dietary suffering. This does not have to be your loved one’s reality with the assistance of an Illinois nursing home abuse lawyer
