Spine injuries are some of the most devastating to overcome because they can significantly impact someone’s life. Unfortunately, they occur in many different situations, including car accidents, slip and falls, and more.

When you suffer a spine injury, the aftermath and symptoms are often determined by where along the spine the injury occurs. Below, we will explain the locations along the spine and how you may experience lifelong damages because of someone else’s negligence.

Cervical

The cervical portion of the spine is in your neck. It’s the closest to the brain and can have a significant impact on someone should an injury occur. An injury at the cervical portion of the spine can result in quadriplegia. This type of injury can result in function loss below the neck and shoulder.

Thoracic

Just below the cervical portion of the spine is the thoracic spine. It is responsible for stability, so an injury to this portion of the spine can be devastating. In many situations, damage to the thoracic spinal cord results in paraplegia, which is function loss in the lower limbs.

Lumbar

The lumbar portion of the spine sits below the thoracic and has larger vertebrae. It is the part of your spine that carries the most weight. While some lumbar spine injuries can severely affect lower body function, some individuals may still be able to walk with the help of specialized medical equipment.

Sacral

The sacral spine is just above your tailbone. An injury to the sacral spine (or sacrum) can result in lower body function struggles and trouble with bowel and bladder control. Someone who suffers a sacral spine injury may still be able to walk after the injury.
