Birth injuries are some of the most devastating that people can sustain. Worst of all, they happen to young children. One of the most common questions we get is, “are birth injuries permanent?” The simple answer is it depends. You never know how a birth injury progresses, but it often depends on how severe the injury is. Here are some things to know about birth injuries:

Permanent Birth Injuries

Some birth injuries, such as cerebral palsy, can permanently impact a person. Even with permanent birth injuries, though, special care can maximize the child’s quality of life moving forward. A permanent injury is one that will significantly change how the child develops physically and mentally.

Non-Permanent Birth Injuries

Some injuries are not permanent, and your baby can effectively heal with the right treatment. You can recognize the non-permanent birth injuries based on numerous situations, but here are some of the damages that may not be permanent with proper treatment options.

  • Newborn jaundice – the effects of jaundice can be permanent if not treated correctly, but the condition itself is not permanent.
  • Brachial plexus – brachial plexus can heal in less than severe situations. Babies can recover as long as the injury is minor and the baby is receiving treatment.
  • Bruises and fractures – it is common for babies to experience bruises and fractures, especially due to the excessive pressure or because of birth-aiding tools. However, it’s possible for these injuries to heal over time.
