Have you heard of distracted walking? The idea may seem silly, but a recent report from Pew Research Center found that more than half of all pedestrians claim to have either been bumped into or having themselves bumped into something due to distraction caused by a cellphone.

Distracted walking would almost be comical if it weren’t for one sad fact: Pedestrian accidents have risen steeply over the past few years. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 12 pedestrians are killed in traffic accidents every day, and distraction – both pedestrian and driver – plays a large role in these tragic accidents. Jaywalking in Chicago isn’t the only way to be injured, either. Plenty of pedestrian accidents occur where there are crosswalks.
