Many people love the freedom of riding a bicycle, especially when they are commuting, and can save significant amounts of money on gas. However, bicycle accidents happen far too often. Not everyone knows how to ride safely in a way that helps them avoid accidents and negligent drivers. Here are some tips you should keep in mind.

Wear Safety Gear

Of course, you want to be sure you wear a helmet to minimize the impact that a crash may have on your head. A helmet may not wholly prevent damages, but it can soften the blow. When appropriate, you should also consider other safety equipment or clothing to prevent severe injuries (such as burns and broken bones).

Go with the Flow of Traffic

You should never go against traffic when on a bicycle. It helps to ride with the flow of traffic and obey all traffic laws. For instance, if you’re at a traffic light, make sure you stop as you should. Also, keep lane markings in mind – bike lanes exist for a reason.

Don’t Ride at Night

Visibility is essential to your safety. As such, you should avoid riding at night if you can. You should also wear clothing that makes you easy to see by drivers. You should also be vigilant and look for drivers who may exhibit signs of negligence that can crash into you.

Stay Alert

You should never just assume that others are going to be safe. Never assume that drivers are going to respect your position on the road. Instead, stay as alert as you would as a driver on the road. Watch for drivers who may be speeding, swerving, or otherwise displaying signs of negligence.
