Burn injuries can occur in numerous situations. For some, a burn may result from a car accident, while others may suffer severe burns because of someone spilling hot liquids. No matter the reason, a burn injury can have a significant impact on a person’s life.

A medical professional would diagnose a burn injury by degrees. The more severe the burn, the higher the degree. Here are some of the symptoms so that you can recognize just how bad burn injuries are.

First-Degree Burns

A first-degree burn is often a superficial burn. An example of a first-degree burn is a sunburn. In most situations, the burn impacts just the outer layer of your skin, causing some redness and pain. The chance for long-term damages is minor.

Second-Degree Burns

In many situations, a second-degree burn impacts the dermis and epidermis. It causes the burn area to turn red and creates blisters where the burn occurs. Second-degree burns often result in severe pain and swelling.

Third-Degree Burns

A third-degree burn is referred to as full thickness. It can significantly damage all layers of skin and go into your tissues. The area where the burn occurs may become white or completely blackened. It is often extremely painful.

Fourth-Degree Burns

Fourth-degree burns are the worst you may experience, going into the tissues and possibly the nerves, muscles, and bones. These burns can destroy nerve endings, resulting in numbness in the burn area. Fourth-degree burns are often the rarest, but when they do happen, they can be devastating.
