While most mothers would hope to have a perfectly healthy delivery, it’s not always possible. You may require an emergency cesarean section to help prevent harm to you and your baby. In these situations, your doctor must look for potential problems to determine if you should have an emergency C-section to deliver your baby.

Here’s what you can look for to determine if you need a C-section.

Fetal Distress

Your doctor might notice that your baby is showing signs of distress. An irregular heartbeat can indicate problems during the pregnancy. If your baby is showing distress, or if you’re exhibiting signs of a dangerous condition, the doctor may opt for a cesarean section to help the situation.

Delayed Delivery

Labor should only last so many hours. When the time exceeds a specific point, it is considered prolonged. A prolonged labor can cause numerous problems, so doctors must work to determine if a C-section is necessary.

Placenta Abruption

In many cases, the placenta will tear away from the uterine wall. It can cause numerous problems, including excessive bleeding. The abruption can significantly impact the baby and mother, so the doctor may perform a C-section to help prevent further damage.

Prolapsed Umbilical Cord

A prolapsed umbilical cord occurs when it drops into the mother’s vagina before the baby does. This could cause severe problems, so the doctor must act quickly to provide a solution. An emergency C-section following a prolapsed umbilical cord can potentially save a baby’s life.
