Lansing, IL — A fatal multi‑vehicle collision Monday afternoon on Interstate 80/94 claimed the life of one motorist and snarled traffic for hours, Illinois State Police report.

Crash Details

At approximately 4 :31 p.m., a sedan became stalled in the eastbound lanes of I‑80/94 just west of Torrence Avenue. A second car, also traveling eastbound, failed to stop and struck the stalled vehicle from behind. The impact pushed the second car into an adjacent lane where it collided with a semi‑trailer truck.

The driver of the second car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the stalled vehicle suffered injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital; their condition has not been disclosed. The semi‑truck driver was uninjured.

Traffic Impact

All eastbound traffic entering from the Tri‑State Tollway (I‑294) onto I‑80/94 was temporarily held at the interchange. Motorists were funneled into the far‑right lane while crews cleared wreckage and investigated. The scene remained partially restricted for several hours before reopening.

Investigation Ongoing

The Illinois State Police Major Accident Investigation Unit is examining the crash. Authorities have not released information on contributing factors such as speed, weather, or mechanical failure. Witnesses and anyone with relevant dash‑cam footage are asked to contact ISP District 15.
