Birth injuries are unfortunate and often some of the worst types of medical malpractice injuries. Not only is the newborn always completely innocent, but cases such as these can result in a lifetime of care, which ultimately will cost a fortune. If you believe your newborn was injured due to the negligence or malpractice of a doctor, you may have a birth injury lawsuit on your hands. The following is a list of a few of the most common birth injuries.

Brachial Plexus Injuries

The brachial plexus refers to the nerves that transmit signals from the spinal cord down to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Brachial plexus injuries often occur when these nerves are stretched, torn, or completely dislodged from the spine. An injury like this can be the result of a baby being physically pulled or manipulated during the birthing process.

Perinatal Asphyxiation

Perinatal asphyxiation is when a baby is without oxygen for a significant amount of time during or directly after birth. The lack of oxygen can result in labored breathing, seizures, a coma, pale complexion, as well as neurological damage which may worsen the longer the baby remains without oxygen.

Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is characterized by weak muscle development, muscle spasms, and lack of motor skills resulting from incorrect brain development. Cerebral Palsy can occur when a baby experiences a fetal stroke, an infection, lack of oxygen, trauma to the brain during or after birth, and can also be caused by genetic mutation.

Fractured Bones

Difficult deliveries can sometimes lead to bone fractures. And more often than not, because of the delivery, the bone fractured will be the clavicle. Depending on the severity of the fracture, the bone may be able to heal on its own or with the help of immobilization.

Facial Paralysis

Facial paralysis can occur when the facial nerves of a newborn are damaged temporarily or permanently. Facial paralysis involves a lack of control over facial muscles and is most noticeable when a newborn cries. Like many other types of birth injuries, this injury will often dissipate on its own over time.

As unfortunate as birth injuries are, they happen. And when they do, it’s important to know exactly what is going on before moving forward. If you believe your newborn was injured due to the negligence or malpractice of a doctor, you may be liable for compensation. For your free consultation, contact Walner Law today.
