With summer officially under way, Chicagoland residents are looking to cool off at Lake Michigan and at the swimming pool. Swimming pools are a wonderful way to cool off during the summer heat, however serious injuries can occur if pools are not operated, secured, or maintained properly. These injuries can include everything from brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and even death as a result of drowning. More than half of drowning victims treated in emergency units require hospitalization or transfer to a specialist unit for further care.

There are a number of circumstances that could lead to serious injury, or even death in a swimming pool accident. Although it is among the most severe, drowning is not the only swimming accident that can happen in or near a pool. Common causes of Illinois swimming pool accidents include:

  • Defective swimming pool drains
  • Distracted and under trained lifeguards
  • Improper or defective gates and fences
  • Improper pool maintenance
  • Inadequately marked shallow or deep ends
  • Murky pool water
  • Overcrowded swimming facilities
  • Slick pool decks.

Swimming pool accidents fall under premise liability claims which means a pool owner can be held liable for injuries sustained on the property due to lack of maintenance, negligent supervision, or unsafe conditions. This is why we stress the importance of taking the time to inspect your property’s pool and the surrounding area, and properly warning guests of possible dangers to be conscious of.

If you or your loved one has suffered from a serious personal injury or wrongful death in a swimming pool accident, you may be able to seek compensation for your injury or loss while holding negligent owners accountable. It is important to discuss your potential case with one of our lawyers who can help you determine if someone else’s negligence caused your injury.
