What Happened:
At approximately 2:10 a.m., a dark-colored sedan driven by 22‑year‑old Laquell Collins was traveling southbound on Central Avenue at a high rate of speed. As Collins approached the intersection with Augusta Avenue, his vehicle plowed into a second dark-colored sedan that was eastbound and entered the intersection against a red light.

The impact was so severe that both sedans were sent careening off the roadway, coming to rest in the yards of two separate homes. A third vehicle—a beige minivan driven by a 45‑year‑old man—was struck when one of the sedans rebounded into its front end. Miraculously, the minivan driver declined medical transport and was uninjured.

Victims and Response:
The driver of the eastbound sedan, a 36‑year‑old man, was extricated with life‑threatening injuries and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later succumbed to “severe trauma.” A 35‑year‑old woman riding in the same vehicle sustained critical injuries and was transported to Stroger Hospital for emergency care. Despite the severity of the car crash in Chicago, first responders on their way to another call witnessed the collision and immediately secured the scene.

Investigation Underway:
Chicago Police Department Major Accident Detectives are leading the investigation, seeking to determine whether excessive speed, traffic signal violations, or other factors contributed to this tragic loss of life. No further details have been released as detectives continue to reconstruct the sequence of events.
